Book Review : Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

“Eleanor was right. She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.”

Rainbow Rowell, Eleanor & Park

No. of pages : 325

My rating : ๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽง.4/5 ๐ŸŽง
My review : To be frank romance / ya romance is not my go to genre , but still i liked this one ๐ŸŒป There was many cool things that I love was I’m this book . The way they connected over comic book fandoms like X-MEN , watchmen etc ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒป It has many fanboy moments which worked as magic for me ๐ŸŒธ And I liked how different both of them were . Instead of being the couple in every romantic story , both were an outcast in their own way , the girl was fat , waywardly dressed and the boy was short , thin and what they liked about each other was what made this book Interesting for me ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒธ
It was my first book by Rainbow Rowell and I’m definitely gonna read more by her ๐ŸŒป
Final verdict : This book has it’s flaws but it’s brilliance shadows all those flaws , it’s not a perfect book but a really good book ๐ŸŒธ I enjoyed reading it throughout.
My Recommendation : This book is a great book to start with , if you’re not bored by fandoms , but I know not everyone likes comic books and mixed tape stuffs so I won’t say it’s for everyone to read , but yeah the way they’re attracted to each other is something I hope everyone will like ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒป

The wizard of Oz by Frank Baum

I literally loved this book ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ It exceeded all my expectations and it is just so nice ๐ŸŒปThe writing style is simple yet brilliant .
The Wizard of Oz is simply a lesson in self-sufficiency. Any trait or ability that we’re wishing for can be found inside ourselves.

The Lion wants courage and yet for his friends he showed feats of bravery without realising . The Tin Woodman wants a heart and is the kindest of all. The Scarecrow, the smartest of them all, believed he had no brain. And Dorothy already has the means to get home, right there on her feet. There is this all-powerful Rescuer unseen behind the curtain, who is a fraud. Unneeded. Everything they needed was already theirs.
I was Astonished to know an alternate theory related to this book i.e ” this book inspired by the real-life economic struggles during the Gold Standard” and it’s a political allegory disguised in form of a children’s book ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
For ex :
๐ŸŒปThe scarecrow represents the farmers in the west. most of these farmers had mortgages and owed money to the bankers in the east.
๐ŸŒปThe cowardly lion is William Jennings Bryan, A populist leader and the face of the Free Silver Movement.
๐ŸŒป The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or O-Z the abbreviation for an ounce of gold.
So knowing these things I was left awestruck ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

My recommendation : This book is a must read for both children and adult

Book Review : To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee

๐ŸŒปโ€œAs you grow older, youโ€™ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and donโ€™t you forget itโ€ฆWhenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash.โ€

My Rating : 5 ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿฆ/5๐Ÿฆ

My Review : This book is a fine example of why some books are said to be timeless ๐ŸŒป I’m thinking about people mentioning whether it’s not that special , according to me what makes it special is the way this book puts focus on issues like racial discrimination , inequality , gender biases and hypocrisy in individuals . It is special because the way the narration is done through the eyes of Scout who’s so innocent and have her own understanding to things , and the way all the characters are given depth and how each character signified one or more important lessons of the world ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒธ

๐ŸŒปThe best thing about this book is being realistic , it didn’t go for the happy heroic things but showcased the dark reality of our world .

๐ŸŒป This book was narrated using the joy , enthusiasm and light humour of childhood mixed with the harsh realities of life ๐ŸŒ
Coming to my favourite character of this book , Mr. Atticus Finch was the perfect father one would ever want , he knows how to handle situations and understand others reasons to do things ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒป He’s the kind of male I definitely want to be throughout my life ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒธ

๐ŸŒป โ€œUntil I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.โ€

My Recommendation : Read this book as it’s one such book that I think despite of the genre preferences everyone needs to read ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿฆ

Book Review : Atomic Habits by James Clear

My Rating : 4.3 ๐ŸŒ / 5๐ŸŒ
My Review : This book is all about
the word ‘atomic habit’ which is a regular practice or routine that is not only small and easy to do but is also the source of incredible power; a component of the system of compound growth.

This book focuses on some key ideas , that are :
๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธHabits are the compound interest of self-improvement.
๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธIf you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your system instead (i.e the way you do your things in day to day basis ).
๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธThe most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become (visualising how you want your future to look like )
๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธThe Four Laws of Behavior Change are –
(1) make it obvious,
(2) make it attractive,
(3) make it easy, and
(4) make it satisfying.
๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธEnvironment is the invisible hand that shapes human behavior.

My Recommendation : If you want to learn how your small habits play big roles in the way your future is gonna shape and I can say if you read this book and apply these steps in your day to day life , then I feel it’s gonna change you and your career in a big way ๐ŸŒป.

Book Review : Three Japanese short stories ( part of penguin modern minis)

Overall Rating : 5๐ŸŒŸ out of 5
My review : Sometimes less words has more meaning and this was kind of a book ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ‘
1st story : Behind the prison by Nagai Kafu โ€œNo, nothing in this world is as oppressive and debilitating as blood ties.โ€

It was a witty satire against agonizing truths. It puts in view the problems and ill practices of the world and also discusses various things as aging and how we never acknowledge even our loved ones (parent) are gonna be old . So it’s really touching ๐Ÿ˜
Rating 5 ๐ŸŒŸ
2nd story : Closet LLB by Uno Koji
The second story is about a boy who wanted to be a novelist and in persueing it the difficulties he has faced and amends he made with his life(took the easy way ) and how he stopped doing anything and spent most of his time sleeping and dreaming. But he was more of a dreamer and thinks himself as a rare perfectionist (always reasoning that if he was regular at something he would have been the best in the world ๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ˜ถ) He just boasts about himself and finds fault in any thing artistic or anyone , even the best in their respective professions ๐Ÿ˜ถ so in the end he was a failure according to me ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ
Rating : 4.5 ๐ŸŒŸ
3rd story : General Kim by Akutagawa Ryunosuke โ€œTo any nationโ€™s people, their history is glorious. The legend of General Kim is by no means the only one worth a laugh.โ€
Last one is pretty funny๐Ÿ˜ and a spoof of patriotism unintentionally by the character but the author did what he wanted to do ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ‘
Rating : 4.7 ๐ŸŒŸ

My Recommendation : This book is good place to start with Japanese Literature ๐ŸŒธ

Happy birthday Harry and JK Rowling

“yoฯ… plฮฑce ั‚oo ะผฯ…cะฝ ฮนะผporั‚ฮฑษดce… oษด ั‚ะฝe ั•o-cฮฑlled pฯ…rฮนั‚y oา“ ะฒlood! yoฯ… า“ฮฑฮนl ั‚o recoษขษดฮนze ั‚ะฝฮฑั‚ ฮนั‚ ะผฮฑั‚ั‚erั• ษดoั‚ wะฝฮฑั‚ ั•oะผeoษดe ฮนั• ะฒorษด, ะฒฯ…ั‚ wะฝฮฑั‚ ั‚ะฝey ษขrow ั‚o ะฒe “

So today’s the birthday of JK Rowling’s and Harry Potter ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿฌ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ Today’s the day which changed lives of many of the kids of around the globe ๐ŸŒ
๐Ÿ”ฎ We lived our dreams through the story of Harry Potter ๐ŸŒป
๐Ÿ”ฎ Harry , Hermione and Ron became our best friends through the books and movie ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ”ฎ We learned so many lessons through the many characters of this series ๐Ÿ™Œ
๐Ÿ”ฎ Harry taught us the importance of being kind and brave , Ron taught us how to be a friend , Hermione taught us the importance of knowledge and hardwork(and she’s my dream bestfriend ) , Hagrid taught us that even monsters need love through his affection towards beasts , Dumbledore taught us what having a little extra faith in someone can do to their confidence and the Weasley twins taught us living every moment of our life in the best way possible ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒธ

๐Ÿ”ฎ Special mention needs to be given to Molly Weasley as she’s the mother which Harry never had and she cared for him and loved him as her own children’s ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒธ The Weasley’s became the family Harry never got ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ”ฎ PEOPLE like Voldemort taught us why love is important in one’s life , if he was able to manifest love then he might have been the greatest wizard of all time , as only talent and hardwork is not enough to be successful there are many things that are needed to be a greater person ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒธ

SO I just want to say that I’m extremely grateful for all the characters of this series and all the magical places I was able to visit because of her so this series deserves all the credit it can get ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe

“There is no story that is not true, The world has no end, and what is good among one people is an abomination with others. “

This book was actually written by Achebe as a backlash to another book , i.e; ” The heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad” .
๐ŸŒปAchebe wasn’t a fan of Conrad’s portrayal of African culture in his book, so he took it in his own hands to showcase the truth of African culture which was way Rich and diverse than what Conrad showcased ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ‘

The best thing about Achebe is the honesty of his which is evidently visible in his writing ๐ŸŒ

So this book showcased two important qualities of our protagonist : ~ The protagonist showed that he was not someone who’s gonna give in to his fate and instead of accepting the way things were he created his own destiny by his sheer hard-work and resilience , the way the protagonist rised from the ashes to be who he has become because of his shear hard-work and determination was commendable. ~ What I didn’t liked was how bad his behavior was towards his wives in many instances , and it made me hate the protagonist , although he did some great and nice things for his wives and children’s but his way of showing manliness and judging others is something I found not to my liking .
My Recommendation : It’s a good book to start , if you wanna know African culture through the words of a African literary genius .

Book Review : The song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

My Rating : ๐Ÿ”ฑ๐Ÿ”ฑ๐Ÿ”ฑ๐Ÿ”ฑ๐Ÿ”ฑ/5๐Ÿ”ฑ

In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun

My Review : According to me ‘The song of Achilles’ is the best book in this genre hands down ๐Ÿ™Œ This book is the best depiction of love which I’ve ever read ๐ŸŒธ
The love of Patroclus for Achilles and Achilles for him was the sincerest I’ve seen ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ฏ It was way beyond anything else I’ve witnessed .
And coming to the author , how can someone write their debut novel this brilliantly ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ , it’s just sheer brilliance , Madeline Miller you’re simply a magician of words ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ˜
It felt as if we’re not reading words but witnessing a Melody , the writing is so fluidic and pleasing to the soul that it’s just on another level ๐Ÿ’ฏ
This book depicted all the actions such as Love , joy, anger , hope , admiration , and sadness to utmost perfection ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒผ
The characterization and the narration in this book is filled with Grace and glory .
Note : Greek gods are more human than humanly possible . Humans are merely a toy for their pleasure ๐Ÿฅบ
My recommendation : This is a must read if you wanna read a pure love story showing gay love ๐Ÿ’š

Book Review : The call of the wild by Jack London

Book Review : The call of the wild by Jack London
My rating : ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ.6 / ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿถ
Blurb : The Call of the Wild is the story of a dog named, Buck who is abducted from a comfortable life as a pet and tossed into the maelstrom of the Yukon Gold Rush.

While facing the brutal realities of frontier life, Buck changes hands a number of times before landing into the kindly hands of John Thornton. Buck finds solace in his respite but it is short lived when he cannot resist the call of the wildโ€ฆ

My Views : Hmm a book about a dog, wow ๐Ÿ˜ As you all know how much I love dogs so I started this book with so much of expectations . In the start when Buck was abducted he faced the sorrows of life and experienced cruelty of another level ๐Ÿ˜Ÿโ˜น๏ธ but with time he adapted and became smarter at surviving . He learnt various skills like stealing food , ferocity , leadership and fighting for what he wanted ๐Ÿ˜ but again he was made to do a terrific amount of labour and when he was unable to do he was beaten to near death , but was saved in time by a man named John Thorton who showed what care and love is ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’“ and this love made him achieve some unbelievable feats and made a name of his own ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฅ and this
This book is filled with pain , torture , courage , adaptability and love (only in the last 2 chapters ) and the second last chapter made me cry with happiness ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿถ It follows the idea that ” there is no higher destiny for man or beast than to struggle, and win, in the battle for mastery”

๐Ÿ…ฑ๐Ÿ…พ๐Ÿ…พ๐Ÿ…บ ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ…ด๐Ÿ†…๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ด๐Ÿ†† : The farm by Joanne Ramos

๐— ๐˜† ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด: ๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŒ ๐ŸŒ / 5๐ŸŒ
๐Ÿ…ผ๐Ÿ†ˆ ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ…ด๐Ÿ†…๐Ÿ…ธ๐Ÿ…ด๐Ÿ†† : The farm is author Joanne Ramos’s debut novel and she did really well in this aspect , the story is about a surrogacy agency which hires clients who are unable to give a successful birth .
This book is a story about Jane , an immigrant from Philippines , who starts serving as a surrogate for her clients where she has to be with the mother for a certain or decided period till the birth of child and few days after that , and she’s pretty famous in her job . This book showcased the perks and problems related to this job .

What I liked : ๐Ÿ”– The main topic was well explained
๐Ÿ”– Book showcased how money and privilege comes hand in hand ๐Ÿ”– The characters are given much needed time to shine and tell their story.
๐Ÿ”– The plot has a lot of potential .
๐Ÿ”– The writing style is pretty captivating , making readers continue to read
What was underwhelming : ๐Ÿ”– It’s not a dystopian book as it is marketed ๐Ÿ”– The plot is good , but as a reader I was expecting a better end .
๐Ÿ”– The book gets pretty slow in various places
๐Ÿ”– There was a good buildup for a captivating ending but it was flat , underwhelming to be specific.

๐Ÿ„ผ๐Ÿ…ˆ ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ„ด๐Ÿ„ฒ๐Ÿ„พ๐Ÿ„ผ๐Ÿ„ผ๐Ÿ„ด๐Ÿ„ฝ๐Ÿ„ณ๐Ÿ„ฐ๐Ÿ…ƒ๐Ÿ„ธ๐Ÿ„พ๐Ÿ„ฝ : This book is highly character driven and if you like a book with good well explained characters and a decent plot than this will be a good book to read ๐Ÿ˜„

I wanna thanks @bloomsburyindia for sending me a review copy of this book ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒผ
